Every pair of hotel districts in this index is 10 to 60 minutes apart by rail, tram or ferry. The matrix gives door-area to door-area ranges in minutes; the recipes below it name the exact lines, because in Istanbul the transfer, not the distance, decides the trip.

Line routes and durations come from Metro Istanbul for the T1, M2 and M4 and from the Marmaray reference page for the cross-Bosphorus rail. Road-based pairs stretch well beyond these ranges in rush-hour traffic.

Route recipes

01Sultanahmet to Taksim

T1 tram from Sultanahmet to Kabatas, its eastern terminus, then the F1 funicular up to Taksim Square. The funicular leg takes minutes; the tram leg does the work.

02Sultanahmet or Sirkeci to Kadikoy

Walk or ride one tram stop to Sirkeci station, take Marmaray under the Bosphorus to Ayrilik Cesmesi, then one M4 stop or a short walk into central Kadikoy. The undersea crossing itself takes about four minutes. Alternative with a view: T1 to Eminonu, then the Kadikoy ferry.

03Taksim to Kadikoy

F1 funicular down to Kabatas, T1 tram two stops to Sirkeci, Marmaray across to Ayrilik Cesmesi or Sogutlucesme. Ferries from Karakoy pier are the slower, better-looking option.

04Taksim to Sisli or Levent

M2 metro northbound direct: Osmanbey for Nisantasi, Sisli-Mecidiyekoy for the mall and Metrobus, Gayrettepe and Levent for the towers. No transfers.

05Besiktas to the Old City

Bus or a short taxi along the shore to Kabatas, then T1 tram through Karakoy and Eminonu to Sultanahmet. Off-peak the whole run stays around half an hour; the coastal road crawls at rush hour.

06Besiktas to Kadikoy

Direct city ferry from Besiktas pier, the single most scenic commute in this matrix. Marmaray via Sirkeci is the wet-weather fallback.

07Kadikoy to Sisli

The longest standard pair in the table. M4 one stop to Ayrilik Cesmesi, Marmaray to Yenikapi, M2 northbound to Osmanbey or Sisli-Mecidiyekoy. The ferry to Besiktas plus a taxi uphill often ties it.

The Marmaray, in one paragraph

The Marmaray is a 76.6 km commuter rail line from Halkali on the European side to Gebze on the Asian side, crossing the Bosphorus through an immersed-tube tunnel; the undersea section takes about four minutes, and Sirkeci to Uskudar runs around five. For hotel choice it means one thing: any district near a Marmaray station, Sirkeci and Kadikoy above all, effectively sits on both continents.
